Consumer Rights: Rules for Businesses

If you offer iDEAL as a payment option to consumers, it is important to be aware of the agreements we have made in the Netherlands and Europe regarding consumer rights. These agreements are made to ensure consumers, such as end-users of iDEAL, have a fair and transparent sales environment. Non-compliance with these rules can lead to the termination of iDEAL as a payment method.

Sales to Consumers & Online Sales Checklist for Webshops

The Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM) oversees the fair sale of products and services to consumers. On the ACM website, you will find extensive information (in Dutch) about the mandatory information you must provide before and after the purchase, such as prices, features, and company details. Additionally, topics such as advertising, payment options, delivery, customer service, and unfair commercial practices are covered 5.

Do you have a webshop? Then check out the ACM's Online Sales Checklist (in Dutch).

Guidelines for Online Consumer Protection

The ACM has published the Guidelines for Online Consumer Protection (in Dutch) to help businesses comply with the rules regarding online deception. These guidelines clearly indicate where the line is between enticing and deceiving in online environments 8.

Sources of Consumer Law

Book 6 of the Civil Code contains the provisions on consumer rights. These rules are a transposition of several European Directives into national law. Because these rules stem from European legislation, the same rules on consumer protection apply throughout Europe 10.
