iDEAL Processes Record 56 Million Transactions During Black Friday Week
- An Increase of Over 12% Compared to Last Year
- Slight Decline in Activity Following Black Friday Compared to 2023
AMSTERDAM, 3 December 2024 – Although Black Friday was, for the first time since 2016, not the busiest day of the year, iDEAL processed a record number of transactions during the entire Black Friday Week, including Cyber Monday: 56.82 million. This represents a growth of 12.31% compared to 2023.
Heavy Activity at the Start of the Week
The transaction data clearly illustrates that the days surrounding Black Friday are just as important as the day itself. Many retailers launched their promotions earlier, which, combined with salary payments, led to a record number of transactions on Monday, 25 November. This day became the busiest of the year.
Slight Decline After Black Friday
The three days following Black Friday saw a slight decline in the number of transactions compared to last year (-0.94%). On Cyber Monday, 5.1 million transactions were processed, slightly fewer than the 5.12 million recorded in 2023.
Increasingly Spread Out Activity
The significant growth at the beginning of Black Friday Week explains the decrease in activity in the subsequent days. This aligns with a broader trend in which consumers and retailers take advantage of the entire discount period. Amos Kater, Chief Product Officer at Currence iDEAL, explains:
“This year, we saw a massive peak at the beginning of the week. On Black Friday itself, the number of transactions had already declined compared to last year. However, the bigger picture shows that both consumers and retailers are embracing this entire period as an opportunity to do good business.”
